The theme for this year, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” became a rallying call for students, teachers and communities to rise in defense of the Earth.

The main event was held at Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Ganderbal, where Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK), Dr. G.N. Itoo led the proceedings as the chief guest. He was joined by Additional Secretary, SED, G.N. Bhat, who attended as a guest of honour.

In his inspiring address, Dr. Itoo emphasized that the real change begins at home. “When families, schools, and communities commit to giving up plastic, only then can we truly protect our planet for future generations.”

Dr. Itoo announced that all the schools would be declared plastic-free zones. He also called for the rejuvenation of eco-clubs, expanding their work beyond school boundaries to encompass nearby water bodies and tourist areas, making environmental care an integral part of students’ daily experience.

The event was also attended by Chief Education Officer Ganderbal, Oneel Kumar Bhat, Deputy CEO Ganderbal, Rumysa Sangeen and several other officials from the Education Department.

Beyond these flagship events, World Environment Day 2025 was celebrated across all schools in the entire Kashmir division through a diverse array of activities.

These included solemn pledges, engaging quizzes, extensive tree plantation drives, crucial cleanliness campaigns, informative awareness rallies, insightful seminars and talks, stimulating debates, invigorating nature walks and marathons, and creative painting and slogan writing competitions, all aimed at fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the environment among the student community.

In total, 7955 schools celebrated the day with a total participation of 439072 students, teachers/ HoI’s and community members.

The widespread participation and diverse initiatives underscore the School Education department’s commitment to nurturing environmentally conscious citizens and promoting sustainable practices across Jammu and Kashmir.
