Srinagar: Police have arrested five drug peddlers and recovered contraband substances from their possession, a police spokesperson informed Thursday.

He said at Padgampora Crossing, Awantipora, one Nazim Ahmad Mir, son of Abdul Hamid Mir of Kawani, was arrested after 120 gm of cannabis-like substance (in shape of sticks) wrapped in maize husk was recovered from his possession.

At Lavdoora in Kulgam, a vehicle (JK14J-1218) with two persons on board was seized after 14.7 kg of poppy straw-like substance filled in the two bags was recovered from it. Farook Ahmad Bocken, son of Mohammad Yousuf Bocken of Pinger Ramnagar Udhampur, and Tanveer Hussain, son of Manzoor Ahmad Bocken of RITI Kooh Nala Udhampur, travelling in the said car were arrested.

During checking of vehicles in Jawahar Tunnel area, a car (JK14L-2294) with two persons — Talib Hussain Bakarwal, son of Ghulam Hussain Bakarwal of Chenani Udhampur; and Yasir Ali Bokad, son of Gafoor Ahmad Bokad of Ramnagar Udhampur — on board, was seized and both persons arrested after nine kg of poppy straw-like substance was recovered from it.

Cases under relevant sections of law have been registered for investigations.
