If son is guilty, family cannot be punished: Tarigami
FacebookTwitterWhatsapp

Srinagar: CPI(M) leader and Kulgam MLA M.Y. Tarigami on Sunday strongly condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, while criticising the government’s ongoing demolition drives targeting properties allegedly linked to militants.

Tarigami asserted that punishing family members or neighbours for the alleged crimes of an individual is unjust and counterproductive.

“If a son has done anything wrong, his father, family, or even his neighbour should not be punished,” Tarigami said in a statement. He reminded that the Supreme Court has consistently upheld the right to shelter as a fundamental right for every citizen. “If a son is guilty, his father or any other family member cannot be considered punishable,” he reiterated.

Referring to the government’s recent actions, Tarigami said, “Today, the government is carrying out demolitions of alleged terrorist properties, as if suddenly remembering the presence of terrorists. The Centre has been directly handling law and order in Jammu and Kashmir since 2014; it must answer for the current security situation.”

While condemning the Pahalgam attack as “gruesome” and stating that such violence has no place in a civilised society, Tarigami stressed the importance of justice for the victims. However, he warned that indiscriminate demolition drives risk alienating innocent people. “Even the homes of neighbours are getting damaged. What is their fault? Is this the way to fight terrorism?” he questioned.

Emphasising the need for a lawful and just approach, the CPI(M) leader said, “Those guilty of crimes must be brought to justice, but innocent people should not be harmed. We must all resolve to ensure that every citizen of J&K is protected and that the rule of law is upheld — that is the real way to fight terrorism.”
