Kupwara: The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Handwara has ordered an investigation into allegations of unhygienic sale of uncovered meat and cheese in public markets.

The order was passed by CJM Manzoor Hussain following a formal complaint filed by Advocate Mir Imran, alleging that vendors are openly displaying and selling uncovered meat and cheese, posing a risk to public health.

The court after taking cognizance of the complaint has instructed the police in Handwara and Kupwara to come up with a thorough investigation within 15 days regarding the allegations of unhygienic sale of meat and cheese in the area.

The court has also asked the Food Safety Officer, Executive Officer of the Municipal Committee Handwara, and all Executive Magistrates of Kupwara district to explain as to why they have failed to take action against those vendors involved in the practice, despite having the authority to restrain them from doing so.

Advocate Mir Imran approached the court alleging that vendors in Handwara and adjoining areas openly display and sell uncovered meat and cheese, exposing these items to dust, flies, and contaminants.

The complaint highlighted violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act (2006), Environment Protection Act (1986), and Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Corporation Act (2000), citing risks of bacterial infections, zoonotic diseases, and public health hazards.

District Magistrate Kupwara has been instructed to ensure subordinate magistrates address the public nuisance promptly.

The matter has been listed for compliance on March 20, 2025.
