LG orders remittance in life imprisonment to three convicts

Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today ordered remittance in life imprisonment to three convicts who were arrested under section 302, 34, 201 of Ranbir Panel Code earlier.

A notification issued by J&K Home department on the directions of Lieutenant Governor reads: “In exercise of the powers conferred under Section 473 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023 read with S O 2506 (E) of 2024 dated 28 of June 2024 of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, the Lieutenant Governor is pleased to order that the remaining term of imprisonment of the life convict prisoners, mentioned in the Annexure to this notification, shall be remitted with effect from the date of issuance of this notification, subject to the conditions”.

According to notification the convicts have been directed to maintain peace, stay away from indulging into any unlawful activities, refrain from intimidating any member or relative of the victims’ family, ensure their presence before authorities once in six months, and furnish legal formalities required for the premature release before jail authorities. Besides the concerned police stations have been directed to keep watch on their activities, and in case of any violation their release shall be cancelled.

“That they will maintain peace, good character and behavior in the society at all time; that they will not indulge into any unlawful activity which is prejudicial to the maintenance of the public order or security of state; hat they will not intimidate any member/relative of victims’ family in any manner, whatsoever; that they will ensure their presence before concerned police station once in six months; that they will furnish, both surety bond and personal bond, to the satisfaction of concerned Superintendent Jails before their release; the police stations concerned will keep watch on the activities of the released prisoners. In case of violation of any of the conditions, their premature release shall be liable for cancellation,” the notification reads.

The convicts include Anil Singh, son of Sandal Singh, resident of Shastri Nagar, Jammu; Dev Raj, son of Sakhoo Ram @ Sukh Ram, resident of Chak Jaffray Kana Chak, Jammu; and Girdhari Lal, son of Jia Lal, resident of Mangnar, Poonch. The trio had been awarded life imprisonment of over 14 years, over 16 years and over 14 years respectively.
