Forest Department launches sale of conifer plants

SRINAGAR: J&K Forest Department launched the sale of conifer plants for the general public, here today to enhance the tree cover outside forests which include Towns, Urban and Peri-Urban areas of Kashmir Valley.

The sale was inaugurated by Conservator Forests, Srinagar Circle, Tawheed Ahmad Deva at Sheikhbagh Forest Complex, Srinagar. The event was attended by forest officials and officers including Divisional Forest Officer, Urban Forestry Division, Srinagar Dr. Sheikh Mehraj and DFO Planning and Publicity Division.

Speaking on the occasion, Conservator Forests, Srinagar Circle highlighted the need for intensive plantation and emphasised planting indigenous species of conifers including Deodar, Kail and Fir. He underscored the role of the public for helping the Forest Department to increase the green cover, especially outside forests.

It was informed that the sale centres have been established for the convenience of the general public and plants will be made available for sale in the valley during the season at a subsidized rate of Rs.13.50 per sapling.

The sale centres have been set up at PC Depot, Sheikh Bagh Forest Complex in Srinagar and at all District and Divisional headquarters besides, mobile vans will also be deployed for the sale of conifer plants within the Srinagar City. The sapling will be available at these centres up to March 31.
