Srinagar: Islamia College of Science & Commerce marked International Women’s Day with fervour and enthusiasm, celebrating the achievements of women and reinforcing the importance of gender equality.
The event, organized by the College Women’s Cell in collaboration with NSS Unit-III, aimed to inspire students to contribute to a more equitable and inclusive society.
This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” underscored the urgency of advancing gender equality beyond rhetoric. The event encouraged participants to reflect on the deeper essence of womanhood and the role of women in shaping a just society.
The celebration began with a welcome address by Prof. (Dr.) Tahmeena Yousuf, Principal of Islamia College, who emphasized the importance of dismantling societal structures that perpetuate inequality. “Women possess an innate ability to empathize, connect emotionally, and create safe spaces where all feel heard and validated,” she stated.
The keynote address was delivered by Syed Sleet Shah, DySP PHQ Srinagar, who spoke on drug abuse, cybercrime, and the role of women officers in counseling and rehabilitation services. She highlighted the critical role of women officers in addressing the psychological, social, and emotional needs of young individuals struggling with substance abuse or criminal behavior.
Advocate Afroza Hassan elaborated on women’s rights enshrined in the Indian Constitution, particularly Article 14 (equality before the law), Article 15 (prohibition of discrimination), and Article 16 (equal opportunities in public employment). She underscored the legal safeguards available to women and the need for greater awareness of these rights.
Miss Muskan, a self-defence coach, conducted a practical self-defence session, who trained students and staff on essential personal safety and empowerment techniques.
The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Prof. Irfana Shafi, Convener of the College Women’s Cell, who expressed gratitude to the speakers, faculty, and students for their participation.
By hosting such initiatives, Islamia College continues to champion gender equality, encouraging young minds to be agents of change in building a more inclusive society.
