Jammu: One person was killed and 16 others injured when a bus returning from Mata Vaishno Devi shrine skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge near Jammu Saturday evening, officials said.

The bus was on its way to Delhi and the accident took place near Manda, some eight kilometres from the Jammu bus stand, the officials said.

They said a rescue operation was launched soon after the accident and 17 persons were rescued and evacuated to the Government Medical College Hospital, where one of them was declared dead.

Earlier in the day, three persons were injured in a road accident on Baradari Bridge in district Reasi.

Officials said that three people were injured when two motorcycles collided with each other on Baradari Bridge. All three were shifted to the district hospital Reasi for treatment, GNS reported.

The injured were identified as Gangandip Singh (19), son of Swarn Singh; Akshay Kumar (22), son of Suram Chand, both residents of Pouni; and Aftab Hussain (18), son of Nazir Ahmad, resident of Seela.

Meanwhile, police have registered a case in this regard.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today expressed grief over the tragic road accident at Manda in which the driver of the Bus, carrying pilgrims, lost his life and many pilgrims were injured.

The Lieutenant Governor posted on X: “The road accident at Manda in Jammu is saddening. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the family of the driver who lost his life. I hope that the injured recover at the earliest. I have directed the senior officials to extend all possible help to the injured pilgrims.”
