Street food vendor booked after dead rats found in cooking oil

Srinagar: Authorities have registered a case against a street food vendor in Hazratbal area after a viral video allegedly showed two dead rats in the oil used for frying snacks.

A case (FIR n. 10/2025) has been lodged at Police Station Nigeen under Section 271 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to an unlawful and negligent act likely to spread infection, news agency KINS reported.

The incident sparked public outrage after a disturbing video circulated on social media purportedly showed rats in the oil used by the vendor, raising serious concerns about food hygiene and public health. Officials said they are investigating the matter and taking necessary action to prevent such violations in the future.
