Srinagar: Police in Srinagar have arrested a conman for duping an individual by falsely promising to secure the release of his brother from police custody.
The police in a handout said that Police Station Nowhatta received a written complaint from one Showkat Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Zahidpora, Hawal, who alleged that Fayaz Ahmad Sheikh from Sheikh Colony Makhdoom Sahib had fraudulently taken Rs 30,000 from him.
“Fayaz claimed he could use his influence to arrange the release of Showkat’s brother, Sajad Sheikh, who was arrested in connection with Case FIR No. 55/2024 under Sections 8/20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act,” the police handout reads.
The handout says that Sajad Sheikh was lawfully arrested under the said case. “However, Fayaz exploited the situation, luring the complainant into paying Rs 30,000 on the false pretense of influencing police proceedings,” it reads.
Following this, Police Station Nowhatta registered case FIR No. 01/2025 under Section 318 of the Indian Penal Code. “During investigation, authorities managed to recover the full amount of Rs 30,000 from the accused,” it reads. Further investigation into the case is underway.
