Kupwara: Professor Abdul Wahid Qureshi, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir and the Central University of Kashmir, passed away Sunday.
His body was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Kandi Karnah, Kupwara, where hundreds had gathered for his Nimaz-e-Jinaza, paying tributes to him.
Prof. Qureshi’s career spanned various roles at the University of Kashmir. He served as a professor in the Department of Economics, Dean of Academics, Dean of Social Sciences, Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW), and Coordinator of the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC), and then also headed the varsity as Vice Chancellor.
Prof. Qureshi was also the founding Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir.
The family has announced his “Chaharum” will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at his Kanitar (Saderbal), Srinagar residence.
Expressing condolences, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described him as a “remarkable individual” who made outstanding contributions to academia and administration. “Wahid Sahib was a philosopher, an administrator, and a visionary who revolutionized higher education with his unwavering dedication,” CM Omar said.
“Professor Wahid’s enduring legacy will inspire future generations in their pursuit of excellence,” CM said, offering his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. “Allah (SWT) marhoom ki magfirat kare, Ameen.”
