Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the grenade attack at a Sunday market in Srinagar and said the security apparatus must do everything possible to check the spurt in terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah said in a post on X, “The last few days have been dominated by headlines of attacks and encounters in parts of the Valley. Today’s news of a grenade attack on innocent shoppers at the Sunday market in Srinagar is deeply disturbing. There can be no justification for targeting innocent civilians.”
“The security apparatus must do everything possible to end this spurt of attacks at the earliest so that people can go about their lives without any fear,” he added.
National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah said that the recent surge of violence in the Valley is truly devastating and completely intolerable.
“The grenade attack on innocent shoppers at Srinagar’s bustling ‘Sunday Market’ today serves as a stark reminder of the tragic consequences of these mindless acts,” he said.
“Targeting civilians is never justifiable, and those responsible for these cowardly attacks must be held accountable. The security forces must ramp up their efforts to bring back peace and ensure that the people of Jammu and Kashmir live without the constant threat of fear and violence,” he said.
“It is imperative that concrete actions are taken and unwavering determination is shown to safeguard our citizens,” senior Abdullah added.
The Congress’ Jammu and Kashmir unit chief Tariq Hameed Karra also condemned the grenade attack.
J&K Peoples Conference condemned the attack describing it ‘yet another insane act of violence’.
“While violence is unconditionally condemnable in all forms, indulging in acts of violence in crowded areas makes it even more savage and beastly”, JKPC chief Sajad Lone posted on X.
“It is deeply disturbing to learn about the unfortunate and ghastly incident of a grenade attack on shopkeepers…,” Karra said.
“The Jammu and Kashmir Police must take effective measures to contain such brutal and inhuman attacks so that the public can move freely and without any fear,” he added.
He also prayed for a speedy recovery of the injured.

Taking to X, he said: “Those who aim to spread fear among the masses through acts of terror have neither achieved anything in the past, nor will they succeed in the future. Violence only harms common people, who have already suffered for decades from deaths, destruction, and bloodshed in J&K”.
He added, “I am deeply saddened by the grenade attack at Srinagar’s Sunday market, which injured six innocent civilians. I pray for their swift recovery”
