Srinagar: The basement of a commercial complex at Gogji Bagh area of the civil lines caught fire this morning. However, no loss of life or injury was reported in the incident, officials said on Wednesday.

The fire, according to the witnesses, broke out this morning in the basement of the Town Square Mall, making everyone inside the plaza run for cover.

Smoky that rose from the fire in the basement, they claimed, made it difficult for the Fire and Emergency Services to extinguish the fire.

Speaking to ‘Kashmir Images’, Deputy Director Fire and Emergency Service, Aqib Hussain Mir said the firefighting crew had to use smoke extractors to put out the fire which appeared to have originated from the basement section of the plaza.

Had the firefighting crew not arrived in time and begun the operation, the commercial property might have suffered serious damages, he said.

“We called fire tenders from headquarters and nearby Gaw Kadal fire station to put out the fire as soon as we received information about the incident at about 10:42 am. At first glance, it appears like the generators in the basement, which are used for parking cars, had caught fire. Since the investigation is on, the actual cause of the fire may be determined later,” Mir added.
