Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam once said, “If you salute your duty, you don’t need to salute anybody. But if you pollute your duty, you have to salute everybody.” This powerful statement holds immense relevance in today’s world, especially when viewed in the context of employment practices, particularly in regions like Kashmir. The essence of this quote is a reminder that integrity, responsibility, and dedication towards one’s duty define the respect one earns. Unfortunately, this ideal is being ignored by many in the workforce.
A Worrying Trend Among Employees
In Kashmir, it has become increasingly evident that a significant number of employees are failing to perform their duties in a disciplined manner. Observing public offices, one can see how casual many have become about the responsibilities they have been entrusted with. Prescribed office timings are not adhered to, with employees arriving late and leaving early. Worse still, office hours, which should be dedicated to work, are frequently squandered on social media or other personal activities.
Unemployment: A Stark Contrast
This careless approach to work is particularly troubling given the staggering levels of unemployment in the Valley. Throughout India, and especially in Kashmir, there is a wave of qualified individuals who are struggling to find meaningful employment. PhD scholars and graduates are often seen working on the streets, selling dry fruits or taking up small jobs to make ends meet.
Sadly, many of these individuals age out of eligibility for government posts, watching their dreams crumble. In a recent video circulated on social media wherein it was shown that PhD Scholar namely Dr. Manzoor ul Haq, a highly qualified individual with a PhD, Master’s in Public Administration, double B.Ed., and diplomas in Computer Applications and disaster management, selling spices and dry fruits on a cart to earn his livelihood highlights the harsh reality of unemployment in Kashmir. It is truly disheartening to see such qualified individuals unable to find suitable employment, reflecting the challenges many face in securing jobs that match their academic achievements. This situation calls for urgent reforms and opportunities to ensure that talented and educated individuals are not left in such predicaments.
A Lack of Respect for Jobs
It is especially painful to witness such wasted potential when those who have secured jobs through hard work or other means fail to respect the very jobs that others desperately long for. For many, employment becomes a formality a task they undertake merely to secure a pay check. In state government departments, it is not uncommon to hear of employees who attend work only sporadically-perhaps once or twice a week-neglecting their roles with impunity
The Impact of Biometric Systems
While the introduction of biometric attendance systems in some government offices has brought about some improvement, there are still those who resist this change. These systems, designed to ensure punctuality and accountability, are a step in the right direction, but they cannot substitute for the intrinsic respect employees must have for their own work. A government job, especially in a region like Kashmir where opportunities are scarce, should be regarded as a privilege, not a burden.
The Broader Impact on Society
The indifference displayed by some employees stems from a lack of understanding of the importance of the role they play in the broader functioning of society. A job is not just a means to earn a salary-it is an opportunity to contribute to the well-being of the community. When individuals fail to salute their duties, they do not just harm themselves-they harm society as a whole.
Islam’s Emphasis on Honest Work
Islam, too, stresses the importance of working diligently and earning a halal livelihood. The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are clear in emphasizing that the best form of worship after faith is honest work. Those who earn their livelihood through lawful and sincere efforts are considered blessed in Islam. The Quran encourages believers to fulfil their obligations with sincerity, reminding us that work is a form of service to the community and a means of maintaining social justice.
A Global Issue, Yet Personal to Kashmir
Yet, in today’s world, the value of hard work and dedication is often overshadowed by a culture of negligence. This issue is not limited to Kashmir or the public sector- it is a global problem. However, in regions where unemployment is rampant, it become especially disheartening to witness.
Time for Self-Reflection
It is time for those in positions of employment, especially government employees, to reflect on Dr. Kalam’s words. Those who take pride in their work and perform their diligently will command respect, both from their peers and society. But those who pollute their duties, neglecting their responsibilities, will find themselves at the mercy of others- answering for their actions and facing consequences they could have avoided through commitment and integrity.
The Need for a Committed Workforce
Kashmir, with its immense potential, deserves a workforce that is committed, responsible, and respectful of the opportunities they have been given. Those who hold positions in government or other sectors must recognize the privilege that employment brings and serve as role models for others. After all, the dream of a job is a reality for some-but with that reality comes the responsibility to honour it.
Conclusion: Earning Respect through Responsibility
In conclusion, we must remember that our jobs are not just tasks to be completed, but a reflection of our character and commitment to the community. As Dr. Kalam’s words remind us, when we salute our duties with sincerity, we earn the respect that cannot be achieved through shortcuts or negligence.
