Srinagar: Hundreds took to streets in different parts of Kashmir to protest against the killing of Hassan Nasrallah, the top leader and founder of Hezbollah in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut. Some political leaders also cancelled their poll campaign on Sunday.
Lebanon’s Hezbollah group confirmed on Saturday that its leader and one of its founders, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut the previous day.
A statement said Nasrallah “has joined his fellow martyrs”. Hezbollah vowed to “continue the holy war against the enemy and in support of Palestine.”
Nasrallah, who led Hezbollah for more than three decades, is by far the most powerful target to be killed by Israel in weeks of intensified fighting with Hezbollah. The Israeli military said it carried out a precise airstrike on Friday while Hezbollah leadership was meeting at their headquarters in Dahiyeh, south of Beirut.
Reports said that hundreds of people took to streets in Srinagar’s old town, Budgam and some other areas as the killing of Nasrallah was confirmed Hezbollah.
Chanting anti-Israel and pro-Palestine slogans people were seen mourning the killing of Hezbollah leader.
Aga Rohullah of NC announced that he will no more be campaigning for the third phase of assembly elections while as PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti also cancelled he campaign programme that was scheduled for Sunday.
“Cancelling my campaign tomorrow in solidarity with the martyrs of Lebanon & Gaza especially Hassan Nasrallah. We stand with the people of Palestine and Lebanon in this hour of immense grief & exemplary resistance,” Mufti posted on X.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people in old town of Srinagar, Budgam and Magam too to streets to protest against the killing.
A large number of people, including children, carrying black flags, poured out on roads in Hassanabad, Rainawari, Saidakadal, Meer Behri, and Ashaibagh areas of the city.
The protestors chanted anti-Israel and anti-US slogans and denounced the killing of the top leader of the Lebanon-based militant group.
The protests remained peaceful. Police deployed in the areas ensured that the demonstrations did not turn violent, officials said.
Long traffic jams were reported from several parts of the city, including the Khanyar-Hazratbal axis, where most of the protests took place.
Reports said that president, Anjuman Sharie Shian Aga Syed Hassan, led a peaceful protest in Budgam against the killing of the Hezbollah chief in an Israeli attack. The protest emphasized the community’s call for peace and highlighted concerns over escalating violence in the region.
