Srinagar: The strike call by Indian Medical Association (IMA) against the rape and murder of a resident doctor at a Kolkata medical college disrupted Outpatient Department (OPD) services at the Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar and its associated hospitals on Saturday.
The resident doctors at GMC Srinagar and affiliated hospitals, including SKIMS Medical College Bemina, protested on the college campuses, calling for justice for the victim’s family and solid protection for the “defenseless” female doctors in all hospitals.
Besides disrupting OPD services, the strike by the resident doctors badly affected routine work in hospitals affiliated with GMC Srinagar.
Indian Medical Association (IMA) had called for a nationwide strike today to protest the rape and murder of a female resident doctor at the state -run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last week.
Sporting black bands around their arms, the protesting resident doctors called for a thorough probe into the brutal rape and murder of a female resident doctor.
The protesting doctors held placards reading “Stop shaming the victim”, “Protect female doctors”, and “bring perpetrators to book”.
“We have gathered here in response to the IMA call against the rape and murder of a fellow doctor at RG Kar Medical College. We offer the victim’s family our sincere condolences and support in this hour of extreme grief, and also demand the introduction of a strict legislation to ensure such despicable events do not happen in future,” said a female resident doctor at GMC Srinagar.
Since the government, she claimed, hasn’t yet passed any legislation to address the heinous deeds that working women suffer at the hands of certain unscrupulous men, their lives have become a virtual nightmare at work.
“We might also experience a similar incident that a female doctor in Kolkata experienced. Given the rising number of rape cases in the country, we urge that women, particularly female doctors, have sufficient protection at work,” she added.
