Exploitation of local cricket players in J&K: Govt should oversee tournaments and provide financial assistance

In Jammu and Kashmir, youngsters have a strong inclination towards sports, as evidenced by the widespread participation in various games across the region. Despite their athleticism and enthusiasm, J&K has not yet produced as many players as might be expected given this potential. Among these sports, cricket is particularly popular. In every village and town, players can be seen in cricket grounds.

However, in recent years, some opportunistic individuals have begun exploiting the passion of these players. They have ventured into organizing cricket tournaments without any oversight from the concerned authorities, leading to the exploitation of players. Due to a lack of financial support, many talented players have been forced to stop playing. The considerable increase in tournament fees with no regulation has driven many talented players to withdraw from contests due to the prohibitively high costs. This situation has resulted in a significant waste of youthful potential, as bright athletes cannot afford the financial costs of competing in major competitions.

Interventions like fee subsidies, sponsorships, or the creation of reasonably priced venues for these young athletes to compete and hone their skills are necessary to address this problem. Due to the expensive entry fees, local cricket teams in Kashmir who do not have sponsors find it difficult to compete in tournaments. Many excellent athletes are unable to showcase their abilities and progress in the sport because of this financial barrier. Remedies such as arranging community fundraisers, contacting local businesses for sponsorships, and advocating for reduced entry costs or government assistance could help these teams compete and succeed.

In Kashmir, the skill and passion for cricket are being squandered due to the large hike in tournament fees. Financial constraints prevent many talented and driven young athletes from competing, stunting their personal development and preventing the region from realizing its full sporting potential. To ensure that the passion for cricket and the talent it fosters are not lost, this issue must be addressed.

The government and the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) should take firm action to address the issue of exorbitant tournament costs. Some actions they might consider include:

Regulating Fees: Implement guidelines to limit the fees that organizers can charge.

Encouraging Sponsorships: Facilitate connections between local businesses and cricket teams to secure sponsorships.

Organizing Inexpensive Events: Arrange free or low-cost cricket events to ensure broad participation.

Investing in Grassroots Development: Fund cricket programs and infrastructure at the local level to develop talent.

These steps could ensure that financial obstacles do not squander the skill and enthusiasm for cricket. The JKCA has a set pricing schedule that might be used as a workable solution to the problem of excessive event expenses. Fairness and accessibility would be ensured by a uniform cost schedule, enabling more players to join regardless of their financial situation. This strategy might include:

Setting Maximum Fees: Place a limit on the highest sum that can be charged for tournament participation.

Tiered Pricing: Establish a tiered pricing structure with reduced costs for regional and community events based on the level and scope of the competition.

Transparency: Require organizers to provide all information on fee schedules and the handling of proceeds.

Frequent Reviews: Review the fee schedule frequently to ensure it remains reasonable and appropriate given the local economy.

Enforcement Measures: Apply strict fines to organizers who violate the set fee schedule.

By implementing such steps, the JKCA can help ensure that cricket is an inclusive and accessible sport for all prospective players in the region.
