Srinagar: Police in Handwara have arrested three persons accused of honey-trapping and cheating people by impersonating as a girl on social media platform.
According to police spokesperson, Police Station Vilgam received a written complaint regarding cheating on social media platform (Facebook). A case FIR No. 43/2024 under relevant sections of law was registered and during subsequent investigations, three accused persons were arrested, police said.
They were cheating people using their fake Facebook account and impersonating as a girl, police said and identified the accused as Firdous Ahmed Tantray, son of Mohammad Shafi Tantray; Danish Ahmed Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat; and Aaliyan Ahmed Bhat, son of Ashiq Hussain Bhat, all residents of Dohama Vilgam.
Police have also seized the mobile phones of the arrested trio while further investigation into the case is in progress, police spokesperson said, while urging the people to be careful and not fall in the trap of cheaters, fraudsters on social media.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, Cyber Cell of police in Kupwara saved ₹84,484 after receiving a complaint regarding online financial fraud.
Investigating the complaint, it came to fore that the fraud was done using fake WhatsApp call, wherein the victim was asked to submit school fee via PhonePay, after following the directions from the fraudster.
Using cyber tactics, Cyber Cell Kupwara successfully blocked the transactions and the amount was put on hold and thus saved, police said.
Cyber Cell of J&K Police urged the general public to stay vigilant against online fake trading, avoid clicking on suspicious links, fake SMS credit messages, and refrain from installing unauthorized apps, avoiding to pick any video call from unknown numbers and be cautious while sharing personal information online.
“If you encounter any such suspicious activity, report immediately to the National Cyber Crime Helpline Number 1930 or www.cybercrime.gov.in,” police said.
