Thana Divas across J&K marks implementation of three new criminal laws

Three new criminal laws come into effect across country on July 1

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police celebrated Thana Divas across the Union Territory, marking the implementation of three new criminal laws: the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act, 2023 (BNS), the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita Act, 2023 (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Act, 2023 (BSA).

To mark the historic event, a grand function was held at Police Headquarters, Srinagar, where Lt. Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha presided over the function as the Chief Guest, Chief Justice J&K and Ladakh High Court N. Kotiswar Singh was the Guest of Honour on the occasion.

Besides Chief Secretary J&K Atal Dulloo, Advisor to LG Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Director General of Police, J&K, R.R. Swain, a galaxy of dignitaries from the judiciary, civil administration, universities, serving and retired Police officers, media fraternity attended the function.

Twenty-three districts of J&K including three police districts viz Kupwara, Baramulla, Handwra, Sopore, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Srinagar, Budgam, Awantipora, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Anantnag, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, Udhampur, Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch, Jammu, Samba and Kathua, participated in the function through video conference mode. Some of the participants interacted with LG via video conference.

The main function and the functions at district headquarters were web cast through National Informatics Centre (NIC) with the support and help of the Department of Information Technology, J&K.

Concurrently Jammu and Kashmir Police observed “Thana Divas” across all districts including three police districts of the J&K to mark the implementation of three new criminal laws aimed at strengthening the criminal justice system. These “Thana Divas” events saw participation from Hon’ble Judges, District Magistrate, advocates, senior civil & Police officers, students, representatives of various forums and citizens.

A large number of people participated in these functions. The participants were informed about the key features and benefits of the three new laws, which are aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and accountability in policing and the criminal justice system.

Speaking at these functions the J&K Police officers reiterated the commitment of Jammu and Kashmir Police to ensure the safety and security of citizens and to combat crime effectively. They sought the cooperation of the public in implementing the new laws and in maintaining law and order in the society.
