Sahir Ludhianvi, a renowned poet and lyricist, was born Abdul Hayee on March 8, 1921, in Ludhiana, Punjab. His pen name, “Sahir,” which means “magician,” was inspired by a poem by Iqbal about the poet Daag Dehalvi. This moniker was a true testament to Sahir’s captivating literary talent, which had a profound impact on Indian poetry and film.

A turbulent childhood:

Sahir had a lot of upheaval in his early years. His mother, the eleventh wife of a disgruntled landlord, left her abusive husband behind and took little Sahir with her. His father’s constant threats to take him away cast a cloud of anxiety over this safe haven. Sahir’s upbringing in an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty had a tremendous impact on him, moulding his lyrical expressions and giving his writing a strong emotional resonance.

Journey to Bombay:

Manwani’s biography effectively conveys Sahir’s complex life narrative, following his development from a disturbed young man to one of the best lyricists in Hindi cinema history. Early in 1946, after relocating to Bombay, Sahir became involved in a thriving scene of progressive authors and poets that included Ali Sardar Jafri, Jan Nisar Akhtar, Krishan Chander, and Kaifi Azmi. He and his contemporaries were profoundly impacted by the approaching Indian Partition. After moving to Lahore, Pakistan, at first, Sahir couldn’t bear to be apart from his friends who were Hindu and Sikh, so he quickly moved back to Delhi and then Bombay.

Ascend to Fame in Bollywood:

Sahir eventually achieved acceptance and success in the Bombay film business, despite his early hardships. “Tu Hindu banega na Musalmaan banega / Insaan ki aulaad hai, insaan banega” (You will become neither a Hindu nor a Muslim / You are the child of humans; you will become human) is an example of a line from one of his songs that captures his memories and pain during the Partition. He made a transition from a fear-filled childhood to a life praised for its poetic enchantment, and his contributions to Hindi poetry and film continue to have an impact.

Bollywood and Indian music have benefited greatly from Sahir Ludhianvi’s literary talent:

Film songs by Sahir are unique, full of meaning, and possess a rich vocabulary due to his skill as an Urdu poet. Social concerns like injustice and poverty were topics of his writings frequently. He highlights societal issues like inequality, for instance, in the song “Jinhe Naaz Hai Hind Par” from the film Pyaasa.

Bollywood influence: Sahir’s lyrics have a significant role in telling the stories of the films, conveying the feelings of the characters and enhancing the plot. In addition, he collaborated on hit songs with iconic music directors like Khayyam and S.D. Burman.
