“Students, after acquiring this expertise, will apply it in the field to establish their units, start earning a livelihood, and support their families,” he said.

He also noted that NEP 2020 emphasizes introducing new skill courses, with sericulture being the first course launched as a step towards offering more beneficial courses in the future.

Umer Maqbool, a student at the college, praised the new sericulture course as a welcome initiative that will equip students with valuable skills, guiding them towards earning opportunities.

“In today’s fast-paced world, possessing any skill can yield a good income. Offering such courses in college is a boon and highly valuable to students pursuing academic goals,” he added.

Sumaira, a student in the sericulture batch, praised the newly introduced sericulture skill course at GDC Kulgam as one of the best initiatives, especially for female students.

She noted that while boys might find various ways to earn a living even without a job, it is often more challenging for girls to find means to support themselves without a government job.

“This program will make us independent and self-reliant. Such initiatives should be introduced in colleges,” she added.
