Tourist slips to death in Sonamarg

Srinagar: Four tourists from Punjab died and three injured when their car skidded off the road in Kulgam district, officials said on Saturday.

The incident took place in the Nipora area of the south Kashmir district, the officials said, adding that all seven tourists were in an SUV (PB47F-8687) and were returning from Qazigund.

Four tourists died on the spot, while the three injured were rushed to GMC Hospital in Anantnag for treatment, the officials said.

All seven tourists were from Punjab’s Moga district, they said.

The deceased have been identified as Sandeep Sharma, son of Jagmohan Sharma, resident of Chickpaie Mansa, Punjab; Jagdesh, son of Sirbjeet, resident of Attary District Moga, Punjab; Romi Sharma, son of Surjeet Singh, resident of Ferozpora, Punjab; and Gurmeet Singh, son of Darshan Singh, resident of Bigwal, Punjab.

The injured have been identified as Hirchand Singh, son of Mukhtar Singh, resident of Attary District Moga, Punjab; Kiran Paul (driver), son of Veer Singh, resident of Attary District Moga, Punjab; and Ashu, son of Vikram Singh, resident of Ferozpora, Punjab.

A police official said that an FIR was registered at Police Post Mir Bazar (Qazigund) and an investigation is underway.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has expressed grief over the tragic road accident and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

In a condolence message, LG said: “I am deeply grieved and saddened to learn about the loss of precious lives in an unfortunate road accident in Kulgam today. My sincere condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the early recovery of the injured. I have directed the District Administration to provide all necessary assistance, as provided in rule, to the affected families”.

Meanwhile a tourist from Maharashtra died after he got trapped under a snow slide at Thajwas glacier in Sonamarg area, officials said.

They said that that two people got buried under a snow slide when they were sliding on Thajwas glacier.

“The duo was immediately rescued and shifted to PHC Sonamarg, where one of them was pronounced dead, said the officials.

The deceased has been identified as Deepak Parlad Patel (38) son of Dr Jagdeah of Maharashtra. Police have taken up congnisance of the matter,
