Kulgam resident sustains family legacy with centuries-old water mill

Kulgam, May 01: Showkat Ahmad Padder, a resident of Bathipora Kulgam, operates a centuries-old traditional water mill (aab’e grate), maintaining his family’s livelihood while continuing his studies.
The old traditional water mills have scarcely been preserved amidst the advent of modern grinding technology, yet individuals like Showkat have preserved them to honour their family’s legacy.
“We have been engaged in this work for the past 70 years – it’s our ancestral occupation, and we are committed to preserving our heritage. My father, grandfather, uncle, and now I continue this tradition without hindrance,” he stated.
Showkat mentioned that he has been involved in this occupation for 15 years. He completed his graduation from Government Degree College Kulgam and is presently pursuing a master’s degree while upholding his family’s legacy, which sustains his family’s livelihood.
“I operate this ‘Grate’ while pursuing higher studies, comfortably supporting myself. I encounter no difficulties in continuing the work of my ancestors,” he affirmed.
He explained, “We grind rice, maize, and other cereals, reserving some for sale. Through this endeavor, we sustain ourselves, albeit not extravagantly, but sufficiently to meet our needs, for which we are grateful to Almighty Allah.”
Furthermore, he mentioned that they have numerous consumers from other areas of Kulgam and expressed their commitment to continue this occupation despite the advent of modern grinding machines.
“People certainly discern the difference in taste between conventionally ground rice and maize compared to machine-ground ones,” he remarked.
He urged young people to surmount obstacles in pursuing their livelihoods, engaging in activities they enjoy, thereby contributing to a wholesome lifestyle rather than idleness.
