CBI officer investigating high profile cases, dies in Jammu road accident

PDP demands impartial, time bound, credible investigation

Jammu: Friday night came as a shock for the family and friends of a deputy superintendent of police Prashant Sharma who died in a road accident near the Bus stand area of Jammu city late last evening.

According to the police, the police officer was not wearing a helmet when his Bullet motorbike slipped during strong winds due to which he died in the accident.

As per the news agency KNO, Prashant Sharma, son of Dharampal Sharma, a resident of Paloura Jammu, was serving in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). While he was moving from Bus Stand towards Jewel, his bike skidded resulting in critical injury to the police officer.

He was immediately shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu from where he was referred to DMC Ludhiana but succumbed to his injuries on the way.

As per police record, “On 26-04-2024 at about 2357 hrs, Dy. SP Prashant Sharma (posted in CBI Jammu) age 52 yrs S/O Dharam Pal Sharma R/O Paloura, Jammu was admitted in GMC Jammu due to RTA at Jewel (Bullet motorcycle skidded off), further referred to DMC Ludhiana, Punjab where he died on way. Dead body shifted to GMC Jammu for medico-legal formalities”.

Sources said that he was investigating high profile cases like police sub-inspector recruitment scam, junior engineer (civil) recruitment scam and Rs 2200 crore (approximate) Kiru hydroelectric power project allotment scam.

The untimely death of the DySP has raised many eyebrows and some Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) after social media posts about his death in a road accident by his friends.

A senior journalist Tarun Upadhyay wrote on X, “Prashant Sharma, DySP, CBI Jammu, who has investigated Sub-Insp, JE and other FIRs died in a road accident last evening near Bus Stand Jammu. He was also investigating a case against IAS Navin Choudhary @JmuKmrPolice @OfficeOfLGJandK @HMOIndia.”

Replying to this tweet, senior PDP leader Naeem Akhter, wrote, “PDP @jkpdp calls for impartial, time bound and credible investigation. Given the fact that the Late Dy SP has been investigating very crucial cases there should be no room for doubts about circumstances. We express our deepest sympathies with the family of the deceased officer.”
