The encounter began on Thursday at Check Mohalla Nowpora in Sopore. After the night’s lull, a fresh exchange of firing took place on Friday morning, they said.

Two terrorists have been killed so far, while two army personnel injured in the gunfight have been shifted to a hospital for treatment, they said.

A civilian was also injured near the site of the encounter on Thursday.

Acting on intelligence regarding the presence of militants, a joint operation by the police and Army was initiated in Nowpora on Thursday.

The exchange of fire erupted as security forces closed in on the suspected location, leading to injuries on both sides. Among the injured is Farooq Ahmad Dar (35), a civilian caught in the crossfire.

As the operation unfolded, authorities took precautionary measures by suspending all educational activities in the area, ensuring the safety of students and residents alike, police said.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, V K Bhirdi, addressing reporters, disclosed that two terrorists were killed during the operation. As per the documents recovered from the slain, one terrorist has been identified as Saifullah,” he said, adding that the identity of the second one is being ascertained.

The successful conclusion of the operation underscores the vigilance and preparedness of security forces, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Kashmir. “We are steadfast in our commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for the upcoming elections,” affirmed the IGP.
