Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Senior leader and Candidate for the Srinagar Parliamentary seat Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Friday said JKNC is contesting polls with an aim to mobilise political space which was not provided in the last five years.

“The decision taken on August 05, 2019, is unacceptable for us. The aim of our contesting elections is to represent the collective sentiment of our people who are disappointed with the declarations of New Delhi,” he said while addressing a series of workers meeting at Bachidarwaza, Kalwal Mohalla Rainawari, Zaldar Mohalla. The party’s Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq was also present.

“I will not promise people that I will do this and that rather I will try to restore the rights of my people. Elements that are hell-bent on dividing people will be resisted tooth and nail. This fight needs our collective response. We should introspect and find out reasons for how to come out of this uncertainty. There is a need for unity and no alternative is left with us,” he said.

“The people of J&K acceded to India on the promise that no decision on J&K would be taken without considering their views. J&K was downgraded into two UTs and its Statehood was taken away. The people of J&K were humiliated. The Internet and phones were snapped. Many ailing persons died because they could not call for ambulances. All this was done to us without sticking to the basic principle of consultation,” he added.

He conveyed his profound sorrow regarding the attempt to desecrate a local shrine and mosque in Dadsara, Tral, by certain miscreants. Cautioning against the divisive elements, he fervently appealed for unity and tranquillity.

He urged the authorities to promptly take action against the perpetrators. Later in the day, he also addressed a series of workers’ meetings in Zeewan, organised by the In charge Constituency Lal Chowk Ahsan Pardesi.
