Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir is braced for rain in plains and snow over higher reaches even as night temperature recorded a drop on Friday.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a minimum of 7.1°C against 8.9°C on the previous night and it was 0.5°C below normal for the summer capital of JK for this time of the year.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of 4.8°C against 6.0°C on the previous night and it was 1.7°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam recorded a low of 1.2°C against 4.5°C on the previous night and it was 1.6°C below normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of 4.8°C against 6.4°C on the previous night and it was 1.3°C above normal, the official said.

Kupwara town recorded a low of 5.8°C against 8.1°C on the previous night and it was 0.5°C below normal there, the official said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 0.5°C against 0.6°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 1.0°C for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Jammu, he said, recorded a minimum of 16.7°C and it was above normal by 2.5°C for the winter capital of J&K.

Banihal recorded a low of 9.4°C, Batote 10.3°C and Bhaderwah 6.3°C, he said.

Regarding the forecast, he said, today the weather is likely to be partly to generally cloudy with light Rain and Snow over higher reaches with thunder at scattered places towards afternoon or evening.

On April 13-14, he said, generally cloudy weather with light to moderate rain and snow over higher reaches is expected at many places with heavy rain/snow/thunder/lightning/hailstorm and gusty winds expected at isolated places.

From April 15-17, he said, partly to generally cloudy weather is expected with light rain in plains and snow over higher reaches at few places.

From April 18-20, partly cloudy weather with light rain or snow is expected at many places.

The weather department official also urged farmers to suspend farm operations and said that there is likelihood of temporary disruption of surface transportation over few higher reaches during April 13-14.

“Travellers & Tourists are advised to plan accordingly,” he said, adding, “Temporary water logging is also expected in few low lying areas.” He said there is also possibility of landslides and mudslides besides shooting stones.(GNS)
