Srinagar: Following the death of a police sub-inspector in a violent shootout between police and gangsters near Government Medical College (GMC) Kathua on Tuesday, searches have been launched to trace the gang members in Sherpura Wadala area of Kathua.

Quoting officials, news agency KNS reported that the operation is aimed at apprehending the gang members on the run to ensure those involved are brought to justice.

Probationer Sub-Inspector Deepak Sharma, a 32-year-old officer hailing from Sangoor village in Udhampur district, was killed during the shootout with gangsters, while one of gang member was also killed.

Serving at the Ramgarh Police Station in Samba district, Sharma sustained fatal head injuries in the confrontation, ultimately succumbing to his wounds.

The encounter also left a gangster Vasudev, a wanted criminal who led the notorious ‘Shannu gang’ dead while a Special Police Officer (SPO) also sustained injuries in the firefight.
