Srinagar: Former Rajya Sabha member from Jammu and Kashmir Mir Mohammad Fayaz on Sunday returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after three years.
Mir re-joined the PDP here in presence of party president Mehbooba Mufti.
In a post on X, the PDP said, “Former MP @FayazMiroffice rejoins PDP today. Party President @MehboobaMufti welcomed him into the partyfold.”
Mir was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2015. He resigned from the PDP in 2021, two years after the abrogation of Article 370, and joined the Sajad Gani Lone-led People’s Conference the same year.
He quit active politics in September last year.
Quoting sources, KNO reported that Mir had reportedly expressed his desire to join the National Conference and had held a meeting with two party leaders in Jammu. “He had asked these leaders to convince the party high command to give him Lok Sabha ticket from Baramulla parliamentary segment, or assembly ticket from Kupwara segment, but they didn’t agree to the proposal,” sources said.
Pertinently Mir, who was a Rajya Sabha member from 2015 to 2021, had finished third in his native assembly segment of Kupwara in 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Mir had also lost the 2014 Assembly election to Peoples Conference’s Bashir Ahmad Dar.
Mir had come under criticism from different political leaders in 2019 after he abstained during voting on the Triple Talaq Bill in the Parliament, which helped BJP to pass the bill.
Former CM Omar Abdullah had then lashed out at Mehbooba Mufti and asked her to check how her members had voted on the bill.
“Mehbooba Mufti ji, you might want to check how your members voted on this bill before tweeting. I understand they abstained which helped the government with the numbers needed to pass the bill. You can’t help the government & then fail to understand the need to pass,” Omar Abdullah had tweeted. (With additional inputs from KNO)
