 KU congratulates Arjamand Mushtaq on Saroj Chandrasekhar Memorial Award

Srinagar: Arjamand Mushtaq, a research scholar from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and Innovations (CIRI), Kashmir University (KU) has been awarded the prestigious Chandrasekhar Memorial Award, 2024 for her contributions to Biomedical Sciences.

The award recognises the scientific contributions and rewards women scientists in the areas of Biosciences and Biotechnology and is given to two women scientists annually. The award carries a cash prize of rupees 2 lakhs and a certificate. The award ceremony will be held at IIT Kanpur on 28 February 2024 (National Science Day), an official statement issued here read.

Arjamand Mushtaq was enrolled for a PhD at CIRI, KU under the mentorship of Dr Altaf Bhat, Coordinator, CIRI, and has made significant contributions to the understanding of Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), one of the growing metabolic diseases how genome stability is maintained in the cells.

Her work was published in the prestigious American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology journal, Journal of Biological Chemistry and American Society for Microbiology Journal, Molecular and Cellular Biology, the statement read.

In her congratulatory message, KU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Nilofer Khan said that the whole university is delighted to announce that Arjamand Mushtaq won this prestigious accolade.

“This is a testament to Arjamand’s outstanding scientific endeavours that her ground-breaking research has significantly enhanced our understanding of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and illuminated the intricate mechanisms governing genome stability within cells,” Prof Khan said.

She further said that this accomplishment not only brings pride to the institution but also reaffirms KU’s steadfast commitment to encouraging research and empowering women in the scientific community, it read.

KU’s Dean of Academic Affairs, Prof Farooq Ahmad Masoodi; Dean of Research, Prof Mohammad Sultan Bhat; Registrar, Prof Naseer Iqbal besides various deans, heads, teachers, scholars and students have extended heartfelt congratulations to Arjamand Mushtaq on achieving this feat and thanked her for making the university proud, the statement added.
