MSME DFO Sgr, IICT Sgr initiate two six-week ESDP for artisans

SRINAGAR: Recognizing the importance of empowering local artisans, Br MSME DFO Srinagar, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT) Srinagar has initiated two six-week Entrepreneurship Skill Development Programs (ESDP) for artisans in Maharajpora and Khanpora Handwara areas of Baramulla and Kupwara districts.

Br- Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development and Facilitation Office (MSME DFO) Srinagar under the Ministry of MSME Govt of India and the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT) Srinagar is dedicated to preserving the rich tradition of carpet-making handicraft in the Kashmir region.

Assistant Director of MSME, Government of India, Saheel Alaqband (IEDS), and Director of IICT Srinagar, Zubair Ahmad Mir, recently visited both Maharajpora and Khanpora Handwara areas to personally interact with the participants.

During their visit, they briefed the participants on the aims and objectives of the program, highlighting the importance of preserving and promoting the unique carpet-making handicraft of the Kashmir region

The Entrepreneurship Skill Development Program aims to enhance the capabilities of local carpet weaving artisans, providing them with valuable skills and entrepreneurial knowledge that will contribute to the sustainability of their craft. By collaborating with the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology, the initiative ensures that the training is aligned with industry standards and best practices.

Saheel Alaqband expressed the government’s commitment to supporting and uplifting the artisan community. “The rich heritage of carpet making in Kashmir is an integral part of our cultural identity. Through these skill development programs, we aim to empower participants with the tools they need to thrive in a competitive market while preserving the authenticity of their craft and also inputs on entrepreneurship from various stakeholders will help them establish their micro-units,” Alaqband said. He also said that Craft can be presented in multiple ways which will help artisans earn their livelihood and ensure direct benefits.

Zubair Ahmad Mir, Director of IICT Srinagar, emphasized the institute’s role in fostering skill development. “We are delighted to collaborate with MSME DFO in this initiative. By imparting practical skills and knowledge to the artisans, we hope to contribute to the sustainable growth of the carpet-making industry in the Kashmir region,” he said. Now GI Tagging has helped a great deal in ensuring the authenticity of the product.

This initiative is a step towards ensuring the continued vibrancy of Kashmir’s unique carpet-making heritage.
