Srinagar: All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) Friday urged the government to respect the aspirations of the people of J&K and announce dates for holding elections at the earliest.

Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, president AJKPC Anil Sharma said the government should respect the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and must set a deadline for holding elections in J&K.

“The assembly elections are due for several years and now even the term of elected representatives of Urban Local Bodies (ULB) has also expired and soon the tenure of elected Panchs, Sarpanchs and BDCs would be over; thus it would be injustice with the people of J&K to deprive them of their right to choose their representatives,” Sharma told reporters.

He said in a democratic set-up there can be no alternative to the electoral rights of people; thus it becomes imperative that dates for holding elections be declared without any further delay.

Sharma appreciated police and other security agencies for ensuring peace and also credited people for their wholehearted cooperation.

He urged the youth of Kashmir to ensure their fullest presence in electoral battles and choose their best representatives in Panchayat, Assembly and LS polls.
