Srinagar:: Police have arrested three drug-peddlers in Shopian and Kulgam and recovered contraband substances from their possession. Police have frozen eight bank accounts of four “notorious” drug smugglers in Bandipora, police spokesman informed Monday.
He said at a checkpoint at Aglar crossing, police intercepted a motorcycle (JK13H-6023) and recovered 13 grams of brown sugar concealed in a nylon bag from the possession of Zulfikar Shafi Malik, son of Mohammad Shafi Malik of Dalipora Pulwama, riding it. Malik was arrested and the motorcycle seized, police said.
In Qazigund, police intercepted a truck (JK18A-7101) and recovered 57 kgs of poppy straw from it. The driver of the vehicle identified as Nazir Ahmad Moochi, son of Sanaullah of Mohammadpora, Kulgam was arrested on spot and the vehicle seized.
During checking at Nassu Badragund, police recovered 2 kgs of poppy straw from the possession of Umer Bashir Ganie, son of Bashir Ahmad Ganie of Nassu Badragund, following which he was arrested.
Cases under relevant sections have been registered in respective police stations in all these instances, police said.
Spokesman also informed that in Bandipora, police have frozen eight bank accounts of four “notorious” drug smugglers and also seized a vehicle. Two bank accounts having savings of Rs 3,97,603 has been frozen and an auto load-carrier with market value of Rs 3,18,000 belonging to Irshad Ahmad Khan, son of Abdul Samad Khan of Asham Hajin has also been seized under NDPS Act after obtaining approval from competent authorities, police said.
Six more saving bank accounts containing Rs 1,76,899 belonging to three “notorious” drug smugglers — Mohammad Ayub Dar, son of Ghulam Ahmad Dar of Ganastan Sumbal; Mushtaq Ahmad Rather, son of Mohmad Kamal Rather of Ajas, and Irshad Ahmad Wani, son of Habib-Ullah Wani of Hajin were frozen under section 68F (2) of NDPS Act). “All these savings were illegally acquired through the sale of narcotic drugs,” police said.
