 WSC celebrates National Handloom Day at Srinagar

SRINAGAR: To commemorate the 9th National Handloom Day, 2023, Weavers’ Service Centre (WSC), Srinagar organized a mega function at Community Hall, Nalbal Nowshera here.

Director Handicrafts and Handloom Development, Mahmood Shah; Assistant Director, Weavers Service Centre (WSC), officers from IICT, NHDC, artisans and a large number of weavers participated in the event.

Mahmood Shah while speaking on the occasion, suggested improving the quality level of production and introducing new innovative designs as per the latest market trends which will enhance the growth of the Handicraft and Handloom sector.

He highlighted that the department will intensify the efforts to promote the handloom products through various channels and will reach out to the artisan and weaver community by connecting them with potential buyers and motivating different sections of society in supplementing the efforts of the Government in increasing sales and improved profits for handloom weavers.

Assistant Director, Weavers Service Centre, while speaking on the occasion, said that concerted efforts are being made to make principal stakeholders aware of various government schemes like Mudra loans, National Handloom Development Programme, Artisan Credit Card and Centrally-sponsored schemes so that they are able to avail the benefits envisaged under these programmes.

Balvindra Singh from National Handloom Development Corporation, in his speech, sensitised the handloom weavers for the supply of yarn under Raw Material Supply Schemes.

Other speakers highlighted the historical significance of the day and urged the civil society members, youth and working class to buy handloom and handicraft products in order to provide relief to the weaver community.

Weavers’ Service Centre (WSC), which functions under the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) of the Ministry of Textiles, provides skill-upgradation training in disciplines such as weaving, dyeing and designing.

National Handloom Day is held every year on August 7 in honour of the handloom weavers, artisan community and their unique contribution to the socio-economic and cultural development of the country and also to highlight the country’s handloom industry.
