Chairperson DDC Bla, DC lay foundation stone of prestigious project at Wagoora

BARAMULLA: In a significant development to protect flood-prone areas of Baramulla, Chairperson District Development Council (DDC) Baramulla, Safeena Beigh accompanied by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar today laid a foundation stone of prestigious project under “Comprehensive Plan for Flood Management Works on River Jhelum and its Tributaries at Wagoora.

The much-awaited and prestigious project is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 5.84 Crores under FMP Phase-II Part-A with I&FC Division Sopore as an executing agency. The project will safeguard various Nallahs including Nigli, Gundari, Balkul, Frashar, Khursi, and Pohru of Baramulla district.

Incharge Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control, Kashmir, Mohammad Salim Malik, Superintending Engineer Hydraulic Baramulla/Bandipora- Headquarter Sopore, Mohammad Hanieef besides other concerned dignitaries were on the occasion.

After laying the foundation stone, the Chairperson, DDC Baramulla highlighted the significance of the prestigious project and asserted that the project is a step towards flood management aiming to protect flood-prone areas of the district.

Safeena Beigh informed that the project comprises various components, including improvement in the discharge carrying capacity of river Jhelum, bank and toe protection works, raising of bunds and embankments, and re-sectioning and channel improvement of the rivers.

With regard to the project, Dr Sehrish said that the project is of high importance as it was the long pending demand of people. She said that every possible initiative will be taken to complete the project in a stipulated time frame.

The DC further informed that since Baramulla is vulnerable to floods, the infrastructure is being designed with upgraded resilient features. It also includes contingency planning for future disaster events, she added.
