The two patients who underwent the dual chamber pacemaker implant surgeries were aged 62 and 60 years. Both individuals had comorbidities of diabetes and hypertension, along with serious conduction defects and recurrent loss of consciousness. The medical team deemed the surgeries necessary to address the patients’ life-threatening conditions and improve their overall quality of life.

The entire surgical process, carried out using a C-arm, lasted for an impressive three hours. The cardiology team, comprising experts Dr. Shameem Iqbal, Dr. Showkat Shah, and Dr. Bilal, led the delicate procedures with precision and care. Their expertise was complemented by the dedicated support from the anaesthesia department, as well as the theatre technical and nursing staff.

Post-surgery, both patients responded well to the treatments and are currently recovering. They will soon be discharged from the hospital, ensuring they can resume their daily lives with improved cardiac health.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that the pacemaker implant surgeries were conducted entirely free of cost under the Ayushman scheme, an initiative by the government to provide accessible and affordable healthcare to citizens.

The implementation of the dual chamber pacemaker implantation facility at Govt Medical College Anantnag is a game-changer for the region, especially for senior citizens who previously had to travel to Srinagar or outside the state for such advanced cardiac treatments. With this facility now available locally, patients will have quicker access to critical cardiac care, reducing travel burdens and ensuring timely interventions.

The Department of Medicine at Govt Medical College Anantnag has already been routinely performing noninvasive cardiac diagnostic procedures. However, the addition of this new invasive cardiac facility marks a landmark milestone in the region’s healthcare capabilities. The medical team is committed to expanding its services further with the upcoming acquisition of a cath Lab facility, which is currently in the procurement process.

Dr. Shameem Iqbal, leading the cardiology team, expressed his satisfaction with the successful surgeries and emphasized the department’s dedication to continually providing advanced medical care to the people of South Kashmir.

The successful dual chamber pacemaker implant surgeries not only demonstrate the medical prowess and commitment of the healthcare professionals at Govt Medical College Anantnag but also stand as a beacon of hope for improved cardiac healthcare accessibility and services in the entire south Kashmir.
