21 tourists rescued from Dal Lake, houseboat sinks in Jhelum

Srinagar: Police on Monday rescued 21 tourists from the Dal Lake here after they were stranded in the water body due to strong winds.

“River Police wing of Srinagar Police today safely rescued 21 tourists in different sorties by speed boats. The tourists were stranded in Shikaras inside Dal Lake, because of sudden change in weather and gusty winds,” the police tweeted.

The police advised people to avoid going inside the lake during inclement weather.

A residential houseboat sunk in river Jhelum this afternoon following the gusty winds, however, no loss of life or injuries were reported.

Police CRPF and locals rescued the inmates and shift the belongings to safer place.

Many parts of Kashmir, including Srinagar, were lashed by rains late in the afternoon.

The weatherman has forecast wet weather over the next three days in the Valley.

Meanwhile, the light to moderate rainfall lashed Jammu & Kashmir parts on Monday late afternoon while the weatherman here has predicted more rains till June 02.

Reports suggested that J&K parts received light to moderate rains this afternoon, bringing down the temperature in Kashmir.

Director of Meteorological Department (MeT), Sonum Lotus said that there is no forecast of major rainfall till June 02, 2023, however, informed that as per the forecast, the intermittent light to moderate rain, thunder, lightning with possibility of hailstorm & gusty winds at scattered places are expected till June 02.

Lotus further said that the weather would remain mainly dry from June 03-June 06.

The MeT director advised the farmers to postpone farm operations like spraying, harvesting of crops till June 02.
