Srinagar: Police have booked a “notorious” drug smuggler under PIT NDPS Act in Baramulla, while a drug peddler was also arrested in Kulgam, officials informed Monday.

They said a “notorious drug peddler” Barkat Ali Mian alias Raja, son of Mohammad Maqbool Mian, resident of Mian Mohalla Pattan, has been booked under PIT-NDPS Act after obtaining formal detention orders from the competent authority. The booked drug smuggler has been detained and subsequently lodged in Central Jail Kot-Balwal Jammu, a police spokesman said.

He said that many cases were registered against him for his alleged involvement in promoting the drug trade by supplying drugs to local youth of Pattan and other areas of the Baramulla district. 

Meanwhile in Kulgam, a drug peddler Ghulam Hassan Dar, son of Mohammad Ismail Dar of Turka Tachloo, was arrested near Khudwani Bypass. His search yielded nine kilograms of poppy straw and 11 bottles of Codeine Phosphate, police said. 

A case under relevant sections of law was registered and an investigation initiated, police said.
