Islamia College organizes awareness camp under SVEEP

Srinagar: As part of the ongoing series of events under G20, an important event was held today under the banner of Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) in the Islamia College of Science and Commerce, Srinagar. 

Prof. Mir Mohd Hanif, ANO NCC Army, and Naval Wing introduced and welcomed the guest speakers from the DC office in Srinagar including students, faculty members, NCC/ NSS Officers, and other volunteers. He gave brief details about the programme.

Principal of the host College Professor (Dr.) Khurshid Ahmad Khan gave the introductory speech wherein he threw light on the importance of such activities on campus. 

Principal in his keynote address focused that activities under Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme are undertaken to educate the electors regarding procedures relating to the registration of names in the electoral roll, correct of their existing particulars in the electoral roll, and deletion of the name of shifted and deceased family members. 

He said that India already has a very aware population in terms of elections, but many went about it without thinking through what they do. The initiative aims to bring about ethical and efficient polls across the country. 

Principal in his crisp address briefed that, the systematic voters’ education and electoral participation program better known as SVEEP, is the flagship program of the Election Commission of India for voter education, spreading voter awareness, and promoting voter literacy in India. He added that since 2009, we have been working towards preparing India’s electors and equipping them with basic knowledge related to the electoral process.

The guest speaker Dr. Manzoor A. Reshi thanked the Principal of the host college for organising such a camp in the college which focused that this initiative of the election commission of India to foster voter education, to make the citizens of the country aware of their rights and responsibilities. Ashiq H. Samoon, in his presentation, highlighted how SVEEP began in 2009, and it has had a very active life since then, creating awareness among voters and promoting education about the election and a voter’s role in it. 

Voters should make an informed choice when they go out to vote and create a better future for the great Republic of India. Ajaz A. Khan, in his talk, briefed the audience about SVEEP and its functioning. He briefed the students and the faculty on how SVEEP organizes several general and focused initiatives. 

He said that it is based on the socio-economic and cultural patterns and the demography of the place, using pre-existing knowledge about voter participation and other parameters to formulate its programs. He urged that students should read about SVEEP and get the information that they can discuss and prepare for their IAS & other civil service examinations. 

The programme ended with a healthy discussion and Q&A session by the students and the faculty.
