Drug addict son kills mother in Sopore; minor girl murdered in Kupwara

Baramulla: An alleged drug addict killed his mother in Baramulla district while as the body of a minor girl with her throat slit was found hours after she went missing in Lalpora area of Kupwara district of north Kashmir, police said on Thursday.

The accused Showket Ahmed who strangulated his mother to death is a chronic drug addict and was taken by police in preventive custody several times, sources said.

The incident took place in Dangarpora area of Sopore township of the north Kashmir district Wednesday night, police said.

The accused was arrested within hours of committing the gruesome crime. The body of the woman was subsequently shifted to a hospital for medico-legal formalities while a case has been registered at Sopore police station.

“The killing is a pure case of the influence of drugs. The accused is a staunch drug addict. He has been arrested and has even confessed to the murder,” a police officer said.

A case has been registered and the probe is on, he said.

The incident has sent shock waves across Kashmir, triggering even a protest in Dangerpora with people demanding that the killer be hanged in the open marketplace to make an example of him.

Meanwhile, the body of a minor girl with her throat slit was found hours after she went missing in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, police said on Thursday.

The body of the 9-year-old girl was found in a shed just 30 metres away from her residence at Zab Khurhama in Lalpora area of the north Kashmir district Wednesday night, they said.

A case has been registered and the body sent for medico-legal formalities, they said.

The investigations have been launched, they added.

Senior Superintendent of Police Kupwara, Yougal Manhas said that police will soon crack the murder case and that the killer(s) will also be behind the bars soon.

Talking to reporters, SSP Kupwara said that police were investigating the matter and urged the locals to cooperate with them in the investigation and share inputs, if any, with the police.
