Arms, ammunition & narcotics seized, 1 arrested in Kupwara: Police

Kupwara: Police on Sunday claimed to have seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition besides narcotics even as an individual was also arrested in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

“In a major success, Kupwara police has arrested a person from Karnah area of the district and recovered a huge quantity of arms, ammunition, and narcotics from him,” a police statement said.

It said that based on specific information received by District Police Kupwara about a huge consignment of arms, ammunition, and narcotics being smuggled in by two persons in the Chatkadi area, a joint search operation was carried out by police along with the troops of the Army 6 JAK Rifles,” the statement said.

It said during the search operation, one Umar Aziz, son of Aziz-ur-Rehman Kumar, a resident of Chatkadi was apprehended. On sustained questioning, Umar confessed to receiving a consignment of arms, ammunition, and narcotics. On his disclosure, a detailed search was carried out and a huge consignment of narcotics and arms, and ammunition was recovered from Garangnard Chatkadi, the statement said.

The recovery, the statement said includes five pistols, 10 pistol magazines, 77 pistol rounds, one pistol cleaning rod, one pistol user manual guide, four hand grenades, and 10 packets of heroin-like narcotics substance weighing 9.450 kgs, the statement said.

It said a case (FIR no. 01/2023 u/s 7/25 IA Act, 5 Explosive Substances Act 8/21-29 NDPS Act 13,18, 20, 23  & 38 UA(P)Act) has been registered and investigation taken up.

“As per inputs, the consignment was meant for the TRF, an offshoot of the proscribed Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) group,” the statement says.
