Srinagar: Former Cabinet Minister and Senior Vice President of Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) on Monday expressed his concern over the continuous strike of the Rural Development Department’s MGNREGA employees in the Valley.

He said that the strike has been causing a halt in the developmental works of the department. Mir urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to look into the matter personally so that the aggravated employees resume their work as soon as possible.

In a statement issued here, the JKAP leader said, “It is a matter of concern that most of the works are pending, and no new assessments and executions of the developmental projects are taking place in the Rural Development Department due to a continuous strike called by MGNREGA Engineers Association in favour of their certain demands.”

“The department is supposed to be working for the development of the rural economy in terms of creation of Infrastructure and durable Assets and generation of employment opportunities including creation of wage and self-employment. But these days the department has become almost defunct due to the strike by its many employees,” he added.

Mir appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to put his personal effort to ensure the issues with the employees are resolved so that the department’s work is restored.

He further said, “The MGNREGA employees have certain long-pending demands that include their regularizations and enhancement in their salaries. The government should be open-hearted to consider the demands, if genuine.”
