Srinagar: “Higher Education Institutions have to create an environment of innovation, research and startup in sync with the National Education Policy-2020. And in order to build on this idea, there is a need for discussion and debate among students.” 

Keeping in view the aforementioned need, the Islamia College of Science and Commerce has initiated Bimonthly Science Colloquiums for postgraduate students of science stream.

The Colloquiums are being organized on rotation basis by the Departments of Botany, Chemistry and Zoology.  All the postgraduate science students are to attend the Colloquiums and attending 70% of the total Colloquiums organized in a particular semester shall be mandatory for the students.  

The organizing Department shall invite eminent academicians and researchers from other institutions of the valley or even outside the valley.  During the Colloquiums, students shall be acquainted with the latest developments in different areas of research and development. 

Department of Chemistry organized first Colloquium for postgraduate students of Botany/Zoology/ Chemistry on 3rd of June. Principal of the host College, Professor (Dr.) Sheikh Ajaz Bashir had mooted the idea in the light of the implementation of NEP-2020. 

The event was formally inaugurated by the Principal of the college who welcomed the guest speakers and highlighted the significance of such interactions in his brief opening sermon in the present scenario. Prof. Abid Hussain Banday emphasized the need of such Science Colloquiums with respect to Kashmir region & how it can be made result-oriented. Professor (Dr.) Geer Mohammad Ishaq, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director, Centre for Career Planning and Counselling, University of Kashmir the chief guest on the occasion in his presentation deliberated at length the importance of the Interdisciplinary Science Colloquium. He stressed the importance of such interactions and shared his long research and teaching experience. His lucid presentation struck the right chord with the students for research and innovation. He emphasized how a student can exchange and develop better innovation in research. 

Professor Geer in his presentation explained basic fundamentals of research, types of research, criteria for good research, quality of good research and steps involved to conduct the best research & Innovation. The interaction ended with the question-answer session. 

Prof. Zahida Mehraj, Prof. Javid Hussain,Dr. Bilal Parvaz, Dr. Mohd. Yaseen Dar, Dr. Talat Qayum, Dr. Khursheed A Tariq Dar and Dr. Reyaz A Mir from the PG Department of Zoology and Chemistry respectively conducted the question-answer session. A large gathering of students attended the seminar who shared their views. The function concluded with the vote of thanks presented by Prof. Abid Hussain Banday.
