Srinagar: A Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists was killed while three soldiers and a civilian were injured in an overnight encounter in Anantnag district south Kashmir, police said on Saturday.

“Terrorist Commander of proscribed #terror outfit HM Nisar Khanday killed. #Incriminating materials, #arms & ammunition including 01 AK 47 rifle recovered. #Operation in progress,” Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Vijay Kumar tweeted.

The encounter began on Friday evening in the Rishipora area of Anantnag, a police spokesman said.

Sharing details, police spokesman in a statement said that on a specific input regarding the presence of militants in Rishipora area of Anantnag, police along with the troops of Army’s 19RR and CRPF launched a joint cordon and search operation in the area.

“As the joint team was establishing the cordon around the suspected area, the hiding militant started indiscriminate firing upon the search party which retaliated effectively leading to an encounter,” the statement said.

“In the initial exchange of fire, three army personnel and a civilian got injured. All the injured were immediately airlifted to 92 Base Hospital Srinagar for treatment and are stated to be stable,” the statement said.

“In the ensuing encounter, the hiding terrorist was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter. He has been identified as Nisar Khanday (commander of HM outfit) and active since the year 2018.”

The statement said that as per police records, “the slain was a categorized terrorist and was part of the groups involved in several cases including attacks on police, security forces and civilian atrocities.”

Khanday was earlier arrested in 2000 along with arms/ammunition and detained under PSA. Before joining militant ranks in 2018, he was working as the associate of Hizb.

“He has been involved in several killings of civilians and security forces besides being a mastermind in fresh recruitment of youth into terrorist ranks,” police statement said.

Police said that incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including one AK-47 rifle was recovered from the site of the encounter. “All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” it said.
