Srinagar: After a brief exchange of fire, militants managed to give slip to the security forces in Haripora Imamsahib area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district where an encounter broke out last night, reports said on Thursday.

The encounter broke out Wednesday night after a joint team of police, Army and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

News agency KNO quoted a police official saying that as the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering a gunfight.

As per the official, after initial exchange of fire, no contact was established with the militants.

He said that cordon layers were tightened after initial exchange of fire, however, no militants were found during subsequent searches after which the operation was called off.

Meanwhile, police on Thursday said an overground worker of militants was arrested from Gudmacher area of Lolab Kupwara and prevented from joining militant ranks.

News agency GNS quoted a police official saying the accused identified as Owais Ahmad Khan, son of Ghulam Mohammad Khan of Khancheck Tekipora Lolab, was apprehended by a joint team of Police Station Sogam, 28 RR and 162 Bn CRPF from Gudmacher Lolab.

“During preliminary investigation, he was found to be in contact with a Pakistani based terrorist handler, who had motivated him to join terrorist ranks,” the official said, adding, “some incriminating material” has been seized from his possession.

Further investigation in the case has been taken up.

“Timely action by joint forces has prevented his recruitment into terrorist ranks,” police said adding, “police requests parents to keep a close watch over their children so that they do not fall into the trap of the adversary who have spoiled the youth of Kashmir for their nefarious designs.”
