Srinagar: A Special Police Officer (SPO) was killed while his brother was critically injured at Chadabugh area of Soibugh in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Saturday.

Lt Governor, Manoj Sinha condemned the attack and said that those responsible will not go unpunished.

A police spokesman said that an SPO and his brother were fired upon by the unknown terrorists at their home leaving both of them critically injured.

He said both were referred to JVC hospital Srinagar for treatment where doctors declared SPO, who was identified as Ishfaq Ahmad, son of Ghulam Muhammad, as brought dead.

“Umar Ahmad, his brother, is undergoing treatment,” they said. 

The locals said that the under attack family is a police family as three of the four brothers are working in police department including the one who got killed today.

“Militants barged into their house and fired indiscriminately but only two brothers, one SPO posted at Budgam and another one who is a student were present at the house and sustained injuries,” they said.

Giving details about the incident, Kashmir Zone Police tweeted: SPO Ishfaq Ahmad and his brother Umar Jan (a student) were fired upon by terrorists at their residence in village Chadbugh area of Budgam. However Ishfaq Ahmad succumbed  to his injuries & attained martyrdom. Area cordoned off, search operation in progress. Further details follow.

Meanwhile, Lt Governor, Manoj Sinha, while condemning the attack said that those behind the attack will not go unpunished.

“I strongly condemn the terrorist attack on SPO Ishfaq Ahmad & his brother Umar Jan.Tribute to Ishfaq, who attained martyrdom & prayers for speedy recovery of Umar. Deepest condolences to the family in this hour of grief. Those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished,” the LG tweeted.

National Conference vice president and former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah also condemned the attack.

“Unreservedly condemn the cowardly killing of SPO Ishfaq Ahmad in central Kashmir’s Chadbugh village of Budgam. May Allah grant him a place in Jannat. Our condolences to his loved ones and @JmuKmrPolice. 

“Prayers for recovery of his brother Umar who was also injured in the attack,” Omar Abdullah tweeted.
