Kulgam: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Friday said that it’s the duty of governments across the country to ensure security of Kashmiris including students putting up in states and UTs.

He, according to the NC spokesperson, made these remarks while addressing a workers meeting at DH Pora, Kulgam. On the occasion he recollected the contribution Late Itoo Sb had on the area as its representative. He commended Sakina Itoo for treading a path very few would have taken after the unfortunate assassination of her father. He congratulated her for her continuous efforts in highlighting the issues concerning people of her area.

Among others Party GS Ali Muhammad Sagar, PP Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq, State Spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar, Zone President Dr Bashir Veeri, District Presidents Abdul Majeed Bhat Larmi, Showkat Hussain, Altaf Ahmed Kaloo, Ghulam Mohi Ud din Mir, Dy Political Secretary Mudassir Shahmiri were also present.

On the prevalent political situation, he said what is being projected by the GOI in Jammu and Kashmir and across the country is far from the truth. “We were of the opinion that the ground situation will witness marked improvement with time. But the situation is worsening with each passing day. We haven’t come across any effort to bridge the gaps of mistrust. On the contrary, we unfortunately see how an entire community is being denigrated,” he said.

Expressing concern over the campaign of hate peddled against Kashmiri Muslims, Omar said, “If any student is attacked or harmed in any State in India, the Centre and that State government have to take the blame for it. A perception is being created that all Kashmiri Muslims are communal. I fear that the hatred propagated may have consequences for young Kashmiri students studying outside, who are just in their 20s and were not even born in 1990. They are being made vulnerable.”

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks “Dil aur Dilli ki Doori” made during the all-party meeting last year, he stated, “Instead of reducing the doori [gap], there is an attempt to defame the entire nation of Kashmir across the country. Ordinary Kashmiris are not happy with what happened in 1990, as people left their homes. The ordinary Kashmiri had no role in it. Infact Kashmiri Muslims, Sikhs faced the brunt of turmoil that is unspeakable.”

Referring to the displacement of Kashmiri Pandits in the wake of growing militancy in the Valley. “Not just the Pandits, Muslims and Sikhs  also migrated from Kashmir and haven’t returned yet. Are we paving the way for the return of Pandits by spreading hatred?” he said.

Expressing dismay over the rising levels of intolerance in J&K, Omar said, “Escalating levels of intolerance against the press is a matter of concern. They aren’t allowed to write the truth. Journalists are languishing behind bars just because they do not want to project the so-called good governance.”
