Bandipora: A special police officer (SPO) of J&K police was killed while four security forces personnel including an assistant sub inspector of BSF sustained injuries in a militant attack at main town near Nishat park in northern district of Bandipora on Friday.
Officials said that the militants hurled a grenade at the joint naka party of security forces near Nishat Park in Bandipora which left the SPO of J&K police dead and other four security men including an ASI of BSF injured.
They said the injured were shifted to the district hospital Bandipora for treatment from where the two of them were taken to Army hospital, Srinagar for advanced treatment.
The officials identified the slain SPO as Zubair Ahmad Shah son of Abdul Rasheed Shah, a resident of Papchan, Bandipora.
The injured have been identified as head constable MohdShafi son of Mohammad Abdullah of Sumlar Bandipora, constable RayeesAhmad son of Mohd Rafiq, resident of Mader Bandipora, Constable Muhammad Yasir Turk son of Mohd Ajmal Turk of Quilmuqam Bandipora and a BSF ASI Umesh Singh son of Mahatan Singh.
Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this attack. Area has been cordoned and search in the area is going on, police said.
Meanwhile, National Conference president and Member of Parliament from Srinagar Dr Farooq Abdullah and vice-president Omar Abdullah have condemned the grenade attack at Bandipora and mourned the loss of a policeman.
While condemning the attack, senior Abdullah said, “Violence in any of its manifestations is always unacceptable and will yield nothing except further death and destruction. The vicious cycle of death has caused much loss to human lives in J&K while devastating the socio-economic conditions of the people during the last over three decades. My heartfelt sympathies are with the kin of the slain cop. I pray for the fast recovery of all injured,” he said.
Condemning the attack, Omar Abdullah said, “I unequivocally condemn the cowardly act of violence. I send my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of the slain cop. I also pray for the speedy recovery of all those who have sustained injuries,” he said.
Other party leaders also condemned the attack.
In the meantime, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) and Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference (JKPC) have strongly condemned the attack.
“Unreservedly condemn the cowardly attack on police in North Kashmir’s Bandipora. Our condolences go out to family, friends and colleagues of SPO Zubair Ahmad who lost his life in the line of duty. May Allah grant him a place in Jannat. Prayers for those injured,” JKNC tweeted.
Asserting that the bloodbath should end, JKPC tweeted: “We are saddened to hear about the grenade attack in Bandipora in which a young police personnel lost his life. Our heart goes out with his family in this hour of grief. How long will this bloodbath continue? It should end somewhere. RIP brave heart & prayers for the injured ones.”
