Srinagar: A policeman was shot dead by militants in Bijbehara area of Anantnag district on Saturday, officials said.

They said that Head Constable Ali Mohammad was fired upon by unknown militants in the Hassanpora area of the district, leaving him critically injured.

He was shifted to GMC Anantnag were doctors declared him dead.

The killing comes a day after a cop escaped unhurt in a militant attack in the Batmaloo area of Srinagar.

Giving details, a police spokesman in a statement said, “Today at about 1730hrs Anantnag Police received information about a terror crime incident at HasanporaTabala area of Bijbehara Anantnag where terrorists had fired upon a police personnel. Senior police officers reached at the terror crime spot”.

He said that Head Constable Ali Mohammad Ganie was shot at by the terrorists near his residential house at HasanporaTabala area of Bijbehara Anantnag.

“In this terror incident, he had received grievous gunshot injuries. Although, the injured police personnel was immediately evacuated to nearby hospital, however he succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom. It is pertinent to mention that the martyred official was posted at Police Station Kulgam,” the spokesman said.

Paying tributes to the slain cop, the spokesman said that police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law.

“Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this terror crime. Area has been cordoned and search in the area is going on,” he said.

Meanwhile, the killing of the cop has been condemned by several political parties and leaders.

The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference president and Member of Parliament from Srinagar Dr Farooq Abdullah and vice president Omar Abdullah on Saturday condemned the killing of JK Police Head Constable Ali Mohammad Ganaie in Hassanpora, Bijbehara.

While condemning the killing, Dr Farooq said, “Violence in any of its manifestations is always unacceptable and will yield nothing except further death and destruction. The vicious cycle of death has caused much loss to human lives in J&K while devastating the socio-economic conditions of the people during the last over three decades. It is high time for such incidents to be stopped now. My heartfelt sympathies are with the bereaved family.”

While condemning the killing, JKNC vice president, Omar Abdullah tweeted: “Very sorry to hear about the death in the line of duty of HC Ali MohdGanie. I unreservedly condemn this attack while at the same time sending my heartfelt condolences to his family & loved ones. Allah Jannat naseebkarey, Ameen”.

Party GS Ali Mohammad Sagar, Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani, Party MP Hasnain Masoodi, Sakina Itoo, Dr Bashir Veeri have also condemned the killing and prayed for peace to the deceased.

JKPC chairman, Sajad Lone saluted the sacrifice of the fallen cop and tweeted: “Yet another gruesome act of senseless violence. Ali MohdGanai of JK police falls to the bullets of cowardly violent thugs.Salute his sacrifice”.

The PDP also condemned the attack.

“@jkpdp PDP strongly condemns the killing of @JmuKmrPolice HC Ali MohdGanie in a gruesome attack at Hassanpora, Bijbehara. We offer our condolences to the bereaved family,” the party tweeted.

Apni Party president, Altaf Bukhari while condemning the killing said that violence can never be justified in any civilized society.

In a statement issued here, Bukhari termed the cowardly attack as extremely heart wrenching while expressing his profound solidarity with the bereaved family.

Bukhari asserted that violence holds no space or legitimacy in any civilized society and such acts have only worsened the collective situation in Jammu and Kashmir for a long time now.
