Srinagar: A militant belonging to the Islamic State Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK) outfit, who was involved in the killing of a police officer, was killed in an encounter with security forces in Anantnag, police said on Sunday.

The encounter at K Kalan, Srigufwara area of the south Kashmir district began late on Saturday night.

Giving details of the encounter, police spokesman in a statement said that based on specific information generated by police “regarding presence of a terrorist in village K Kalan Sirgufwara area of Anantnag, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by police and 3RR in the area.”

During the search operation, “as the presence of terrorist got ascertained, he was given ample opportunities to surrender. However, he denied the surrender opportunities and instead fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated leading to an encounter.

“In the ensuing encounter, the trapped terrorist was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter,” the spokesman said.

He has been identified as Faheem Bhat, resident of Kandipora, Anantnag affiliated with proscribed outfit ISJK.

Police said that Bhat “had recently joined ISJK terror outfit and was the main accused behind the killing of ASI Mohammad Ashraf near Police Station Bijbehara.”

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Vijay Kumar also tweeted “He has recently joined #terror outfit ISJK and was involved in killing of Martyr ASI Mohd Ashraf, who was posted at PS Bijbehara.”

ASI Ashraf was shot dead by outside Bijbehara hospital on Wednesday evening.

Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from his possession. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation, police spokesman said.

Pertinently, “in the last 48 hours, joint teams of police and security forces neutralized six terrorists in four successful anti-terrorist operations without any collateral damage,” police spokesman said.

Police have registered case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated. “People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” spokesman added.

2 cops injured in grenade attack in Pulwama

Two policemen were injured after militants hurled a grenade at a police party in Pulwama district of south Kashmir on Sunday, officials said.

Police spokesman informed that “terrorists hurled a grenade upon joint deployment of police and CRPF near Post Office area of Washbug Pulwama in which two police personnel got splinter injuries and were shifted to nearby hospital for treatment.”

He said police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law and investigation is on.

The area was cordoned and searches conducted after the attack, he said.
